Imam Ahmad (3915) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (9054) both narrated it through Asim bin Bahdala, from Zirr, from Ibn Masud. Its chain is hasan because of Asim. Ibn Khuzayma also recorded it in Kitab Tawhid (408) by this route. Imam Ahmad (3862) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (10423) both narrated it through another route from Asim bin Bahdala, who said, I heard Shaqiq bin Salama say, I heard Ibn Masud say, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw Jibreel at Sidrat Muntaha, and he had six hundred wings." He said, I asked Asim about the wings, but he refused to tell me. He said, One of his companions told me that the wing spanned the distance between the east and the west.This is supported by what Sharik narrated from Asim, from Abu Waail, from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Jibreel in his true form, and he had six hundred wings, each wing of which blocked the horizon, and from his wings fell dazzling ornaments, pearls, and rubies, the extent of which is known only to Allah." Imam Ahmad (3748) narrated it by this route. Sharik is Ibn Abdullah Nakhai Kufi, a truthful narrator who often erred, though it appears he did not err in this instance. And Allah knows best.
