When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, his wives wanted to send Uthman bin Affan to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq to ask him for their inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Ayesha said to them, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not say, 'We are not inherited from. Whatever we leave behind is charity'?"
Malik narrated it in the chapter on Speech, Backbiting, and Piety (27) from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned. Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Inheritance Shares (6730), and Muslim in the chapter on Jihad and Military Expeditions (1758), both through this same route. Abu Dawud narrated it (2977) through the route of Hatim bin Ismail, from Usama bin Zayd, from Ibn Shihab, with a similar chain. She said, "Will you not fear Allah? Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'We are not inherited from. Whatever we leave behind is charity. This wealth belongs to the family of Muhammad for their needs and for their guests, and when I die, it goes to whoever holds authority after me'?"Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Usama bin Zayd, who is Laythi.
