Fatimah, peace be upon her, daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, sent word to Abu Bakr asking him for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what Allah had granted him as spoils in Medina, in Fadak, and what remained of the fifth from Khaybar.Abu Bakr replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We are not inherited from. Whatever we leave is charity. The family of Muhammad ﷺ may only eat from this wealth.' By Allah, I will not change anything of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ charity from the state it was in during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I will manage it exactly as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ managed it."Abu Bakr refused to hand over any of it to Fatimah. Fatimah became angry with Abu Bakr over this and avoided him, not speaking to him until she died. She lived for six months after the Prophet ﷺ. When she died, her husband Ali buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr, then he performed the funeral prayer over her.During Fatimah's lifetime, Ali had standing among the people, but when she died, he sensed a change in their attitudes toward him, so he sought reconciliation with Abu Bakr and to give him his pledge of allegiance, since he had not pledged allegiance during those months. He sent word to Abu Bakr saying, "Come to us, but let no one come with you," disliking the presence of Umar.Umar said, "No, by Allah, you shall not go in to them alone."Abu Bakr replied, "What could they possibly do to me? By Allah, I will go to them."So Abu Bakr went in to them, and Ali made the testimony of faith, then said, "We acknowledge your virtue and what Allah has bestowed upon you. We have not begrudged you any good that Allah has driven your way. But you acted alone in this matter without consulting us, and we felt we had a claim through our kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Abu Bakr's eyes welled up with tears. When he spoke, he said, "By Him in whose hand my soul is, the kinship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is dearer to me than to maintain ties with my own kin. As for the dispute between me and you over this wealth, I have not failed to seek the good in handling it, and I have not left undone any practice I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing with it without doing the same."Then Ali said to Abu Bakr, "I will pledge allegiance to you this evening."When Abu Bakr had prayed the noon prayer, he ascended the pulpit, made the testimony of faith, mentioned Ali's situation, his delay in giving the pledge, and the excuse he had offered, then he sought forgiveness from Allah. Then Ali made the testimony of faith, magnified the right of Abu Bakr, and explained that what had moved him to act as he had was not envy of Abu Bakr nor denial of the merit Allah had granted him, "but we considered ourselves to have a share in this matter, and he acted alone in it without us, so we found something in our hearts."The Muslims were pleased by this and said, "You have done what is right." The Muslims drew near to Ali once he returned to the proper course.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4240, 4241) from Yahya bin Bukayr, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Aqeel, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.
