Ayesha reported,
The Prophet ﷺ said, "It was only Jibreel. I have not seen him in the form in which he was created except on these two occasions. I saw him descending from heaven, the immensity of his form filling what lies between the sky and the earth."

قال النبي ﷺ: إنما هو جبريل لم أره على صورته التي خلق عليها غير هاتين المرتين. رأيته منهبطا من السماء، سادا عظم خلقه ما بين السماء إلى الأرض.
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4855), and Muslim narrated it in the faith (177), both through Amir Shaybi, from Masruq, who said, I said to Ayesha, and he related the hadith in a long context. This is as it appears in Muslim, while Bukhari abridged it. In one narration found in Bukhari, "He used to come to him in the form of a man, but this time he came to him in his true form, which filled the horizon." Imam Ahmad added (24885), "He was wearing garments of silk brocade, hung with pearls and rubies." Its isnad is hasan. It was narrated through Hammad, who said, Ata bin Saaib informed us, from Shaybi, with his isnad. Ata bin Saaib became confused in his later years, but Hammad (that is, Ibn Salama) narrated from him before that confusion set in.
