The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one may take back a gift he has given except a father from his child. The one who takes back his gift is like the one who returns to his vomit."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: لا يرجع في هبته إلا الوالد من ولده والعائد في هبته كالعائد في قيئه.
Nasai (3689), Daraqutni (3/43), Bayhaqi (6/179), and Ahmad (6705) all narrated it through various routes from Amir Ahwal, from Amr bin Shuayb, with his chain, in similar wording. Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Shuayb, for he is hasan al-hadith.Bayhaqi said, "It is possible that Amr bin Shuayb narrated it through both routes, for Husayn Muallim is a proof, and Amir Ahwal is trustworthy."Tirmidhi said, following his narration of the hadith of Husayn Muallim from Amr bin Shuayb, "This is a hasan sahih hadith. Shafii said, it is not lawful for anyone who has given a gift to take it back, except a father, for he may take back what he has given his child, and he cited this hadith as evidence."I say, this is as Shafii said, because a father is not like other strangers and distant relatives, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the father a right over his child's property, for he said, "You and your property belong to your father." So his taking back his gift from his child is even more fitting than taking from his child's property in general. As for those who did not adopt this hadith, they interpreted it as meaning that he may take it back only when he is in need of it. As for the prohibition of taking back charity, that has already been covered in the book on zakat.
