The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were divided into two groups. One group included Ayesha, Hafsa, Safiyya, and Sawda, and the other group included Umm Salama and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Muslims knew of the Messenger of Allah's love for Ayesha, so whenever any of them had a gift he wished to present to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would delay it until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Ayesha's house, and then the giver would send the gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there.Umm Salama's group spoke to her and said, "Speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he may tell the people, 'Whoever wishes to present a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, let him present it wherever the Messenger happens to be among the houses of his wives.'"So Umm Salama spoke to him as they had asked, but he said nothing to her in reply. They asked her what he had said, and she answered, "He said nothing to me."They said to her, "Speak to him again."She said, "I spoke to him again when it was my turn, but he said nothing to me."They asked her, and she said, "He said nothing to me."They said to her, "Keep speaking to him until he answers you."So when his turn came round to her again, she spoke to him, and he said to her, "Do not harm me regarding Ayesha, for revelation has never come to me while I was beneath the garment of any woman except Ayesha."She said, "I repent to Allah for harming you, Messenger of Allah."Then they called upon Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Your wives implore you by Allah for fairness regarding Bint Abu Bakr."She spoke to him, and he said, "Dear daughter, do you not love what I love?"She said, "Yes, indeed."So she returned to them and informed them. They said, "Go back to him."But she refused to go back, so they sent Zaynab bint Jahsh. She came to him and spoke harshly, saying, "Your wives implore you by Allah for fairness regarding the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa."She raised her voice until she addressed Ayesha, who was sitting there, and reviled her, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at Ayesha to see whether she would speak. Then Ayesha began to respond to Zaynab until she silenced her. The Prophet ﷺ looked at Ayesha and said, "She is indeed the daughter of Abu Bakr."
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Gifts (2581), from Ismail, who said, my brother told me, from Sulayman, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he narrated it. Bukhari said, "The final part, the story of Fatimah, is narrated from Hisham bin Urwa, from a man, from Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman."I say, Bukhari is pointing to a flaw in the hadith of Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith, from Ayesha. However, Muslim reported it in the Book of Virtues (2442) through several routes from Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, my father told me, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham told me, from Ayesha, and she narrated something similar. Likewise, Yunus reported it from Zuhri. And Allah knows best.
