He presented a wild donkey as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at al-Abwa or Waddan, but he returned it to him. When the Prophet ﷺ saw the disappointment on his face, he said, "We only returned it to you because we are in the state of ihram."
أنه أهدى لرسول الله ﷺ حمارا وحشيا، وهو بالأبواء أو بودان، فرد عليه، فلما رأى ما في وجهه قال: أما إنا لم نرده عليك إلا أنا حرم.
Malik narrated it in Muwatta from Ibn Shihab, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba bin Masud, from Abdullah bin Abbas, from Saab bin Jathama, and he related it. Through this same route, Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Gifts (2573), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1192).
