The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of the conquest of Mecca, "This town has been declared sacred by Allah. Its thorny shrubs are not to be cut, its game is not to be disturbed, and its lost property is not to be picked up except by one who will announce it publicly."
قال رسول الله ﷺ يوم فتح مكة: إن هذا البلد حرمه الله، لا يعضد شوكه، ولا ينفر صيده، ولا يلتقط لقطته إلا من عرفها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1587), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1353), both from the hadith of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, while Muslim's account is longer.
