The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling an animal for an animal on credit, two for one, but there is no harm in it when done hand to hand.
نهي رسول الله ﷺ عن بيع الحيوان بالحيوان نسيئة، اثنين بواحد، ولا بأس به يدا بيد.
Tirmidhi (1238), Ibn Majah (2271), and Ahmad (14331) all narrated it through the route of Hajjaj, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, and he mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." But Zaylai, in Nasb Raya (4/48), transmitted only "hasan," and this is more fitting, because the chain contains Hajjaj, who is Ibn Artah, a mudallis who conceals weak narrators in his transmission. However, he is corroborated by Ashath bin Sawwar in Tahawi's commentary (5614), and likewise by Tabarani in Al-Awsat (2762) through the route of Bahr bin Kunayz, both of them narrating from Abu Zubayr with this wording. Ashath and Bahr are both daif. But taken together, these routes raise the hadith to the level of hasan. On this subject there is also a report from Jabir bin Samura that the Prophet ﷺ forbade selling an animal for an animal on deferred payment. This was narrated by Abdullah bin Ahmad in the additions to the Musnad (20942). Its chain is daif, for it contains Abu Umar Muqri, who is Hafs bin Sulayman bin Mughira. Despite his mastery in Quranic recitation, he is daif in hadith, and he was declared daif by Ahmad, Ibn Madini, Muslim, Abu Hatim, Nasai, and others. There are other chains for this report, but they are weaker than this one.
