Imran bin Husayn said to me, "Let me tell you a hadith from which Allah may grant you benefit. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Hajj and Umrah, then never forbade it until he died, and no Quranic verse was revealed forbidding it. The angels used to greet me with peace until I had myself cauterized, and then it ceased. Then I gave up cauterization, and it returned."
قال لي عمران بن حصين: أحدثك حديثا عسى الله أن ينفعك به: إن رسول الله ﷺ جمع بين حجة وعمرة ثم لم ينه عنه حتى مات، ولم ينزل فيه قرآن يحرمه. وقد كان يسلم علي حتى اكتوبت، فتركت، ثم تركت الكي فعاد.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1226:167), from the hadith of Shubah, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Mutarrif, with the same wording. Abu Dawud (4/200) said, "He (meaning Imran bin Husayn) used to hear the greeting of the angels, but when he was cauterized it stopped, and when he gave up cauterization it returned to him." Qurtubi said, "The angels used to greet him in honor and respect until he was cauterized, whereupon they stopped greeting him. This establishes the miracles granted to the saints, and shows that cauterization is not forbidden, as we explained before, but abandoning it is preferable." Al-Mufhim (3/351).
