The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Three things must not be withheld from anyone: water, pasture, and fire."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: ثلاث لا يمنعن: الماء، والكلأ، والنار.
Ibn Majah (2473) narrated it from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Yazid, who said, Sufyan told us, from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Its chain is sahih. Busiri likewise graded it sahih in Zawaid bin Majah. As for what has been narrated from Ibn Abbas as a raised hadith, "Muslims share equally in three things, water, pasture, and fire, and selling any of them is forbidden," it is daif. Ibn Majah (2472) narrated it from Abdullah bin Saeed, who said, Abdullah bin Khirash bin Hawshab Shaybani told us, from Awwam bin Hawshab, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain is daif because of Abdullah bin Khirash, who is Shaybani, Abu Jafar Kufi, whose weakness is agreed upon, and Ibn Ammar went so far as to call him a liar. Despite this, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (8/340), which shows how lenient Ibn Hibban was, and Busiri faulted the hadith on his account in Zawaid bin Majah. I say, there is something objectionable in the phrase "and selling it is forbidden."On this subject there is also what has been narrated from Buhaysah, from her father, who said, my father asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission, and he went in between him and his shirt, and began kissing him and embracing him closely. Then he said, "O Prophet of Allah, what is the thing that it is not permissible to withhold?" He said, "Water." He said, "O Prophet of Allah, what is the thing that it is not permissible to withhold?" He said, "Salt." He said, "O Prophet of Allah, what is the thing that it is not permissible to withhold?" He said, "That you do good is better for you."Abu Dawud (3476), Darimi (2655), and Ahmad (15945, 15946, 15947) all narrated it through the route of Kahmas bin Hasan, from Sayyar bin Manzur, a man from Banu Fazara, from his father, from a woman called Buhaysah, from her father, and he related it. Its chain is daif because of three unknown narrators in the chain. The first is Buhaysah, who is not known, and no one narrated from her except Manzur. The second is Manzur, from whom no one narrated except his son Sayyar. The third is Sayyar, from whom no one narrated except Kahmas bin Hasan. So the chain is a chain of unknowns one after another. In Talkhis (3/65) it says, "Abdul-Haqq and Ibn Qattan faulted it on the grounds that Buhaysah is not known, though Ibn Hibban and others mentioned her among the companions." But the Hafiz himself, in Tahdheeb, rejected Ibn Hibban's statement in favor of the position of Abdul-Haqq and Ibn Qattan that she is unknown, and said, and indeed she is so. Take note of this.Likewise, what has been narrated from Ayesha is not sound. She said, O Messenger of Allah, what is the thing that it is not permissible to withhold? He said, "Water, salt, and fire." She said, I said, O Messenger of Allah, we already know about water, but what about salt and fire? He said, "O Humayra, whoever gives away fire is as if he gave in charity everything that fire cooked, and whoever gives away salt is as if he gave in charity everything that salt seasoned, and whoever gives a Muslim a drink of water where water is found is as if he freed a slave, and whoever gives a Muslim a drink of water where water is not found is as if he brought that person back to life."Ibn Majah (2474) narrated it from Ammar bin Khalid Wasiti, who said, Ali bin Ghurab told us, from Zuhayr bin Marzuq, from Ali bin Zayd bin Jadan, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Ayesha, and he related it. In this chain there is a series of weak narrators. Ali bin Ghurab, who is Fazari, the freedman of their tribe, Kufi, is disputed. Abu Dawud and Juzjani declared him daif, and Ibn Hibban went to extremes in weakening him, saying, "He related fabricated things, so relying on him is invalid." Imam Ahmad, Abu Hatim, Nasai, and others were lenient toward him, except that he was a mudallis, and here he narrated using ambiguous transmission wording (an). His teacher Zuhayr bin Marzuq is unknown. And his teacher Ali bin Zayd bin Jadan Taymi Basri, his weakness is agreed upon.
