The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the sale of surplus water.
نهي رسول الله ﷺ عن بيع فضل الماء.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Musaqah (1565) via Waki and Yahya bin Saeed, both from Ibn Jurayj, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir bin Abdullah, as mentioned above. He also narrated it via Rawh bin Ubada, who said, Ibn Jurayj related to us, Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling the stud service of a camel, and forbade renting out water and land for cultivation. The Prophet ﷺ forbade that." His statement, "renting out water and land," means he forbade leasing them for farming.
