Abu Talha asked the Prophet ﷺ about orphans who had inherited wine.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Pour it out."Abu Talha asked, "Should we not turn it into vinegar?"He replied, "No."
أن أبا طلحة سأل النبي ﷺ عن أيتام ورثوا خمرا، فقال: أهريقوه. قال: أفلا نجعلها خلا؟ قال: لا.
Abu Dawud (3675), Tirmidhi (1293) as a suspended narration, Ahmad (12189), Tahawi in his Mushkil (3337), and Bayhaqi (6/37) all narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, from Suddi, from Abu Hubayra, from Anas bin Malik, who related it. Tirmidhi also narrated it by another route, from Layth, from Yahya bin Abbad, from Anas, from Abu Talha, that he said, "O Prophet of Allah, I bought wine for orphans in my care." He said, "Pour out the wine and break the jars."Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Thawri is more sahih than the hadith of Layth." Abu Dawud said, "Abu Hubayra is Yahya bin Abbad Ansari." Its chain is hasan because of Suddi, who is Ismail bin Abdul-Rahman, and his hadith is hasan.In Sahih Muslim (1983) and Tirmidhi (1294), from Sufyan with his chain, the Prophet ﷺ was asked about wine being turned into vinegar, and he said, "No."
