He had an uncle who used to sell wine and give its proceeds in charity. I forbade him from doing so, but he would not stop. So I traveled to Medina, where I met Ibn Abbas and asked him about wine and its proceeds.Ibn Abbas replied, "It is forbidden, and its proceeds are forbidden." Then he said, "People of Muhammad's ﷺ community, had there been a scripture revealed after your scripture, or a prophet sent after your prophet, something would have been revealed concerning you, just as was revealed concerning those before you. But that matter has been deferred until the Day of Resurrection, and by my life, that is more severe upon you."He continued, "Then I met Abdullah bin Umar and asked him about the proceeds of wine."Abdullah bin Umar said, "Let me tell you about wine. I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque. He was sitting with his knees drawn up, wrapped in his garment, when he loosened his wrap and said, 'Whoever has any wine in his possession, let him bring it to me.' So the people began coming to him. One would say, 'I have a large skin of wine,' another would say, 'I have a skin,' and another, 'I have a flask,' or whatever Allah willed each one to possess. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Gather it all at such-and-such a place in Baqi, then inform me.' They did so, then they informed him.I rose and walked while he leaned upon me. Abu Bakr caught up with us, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of me and placed me on his left, putting Abu Bakr in my former place. Then Umar caught up with us, and he took hold of me and placed me on his left, walking between the two of them. When he stopped at the wine, he said to the people, 'Do you recognize this?'They said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah, this is wine.'He said, 'You have spoken truly.' Then he said, 'Allah Most High has cursed wine, the one who presses it, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, and the one who consumes its proceeds.'Then he called for a knife and said, 'Sharpen it.' They did so. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and began slashing the skins. The people said, 'There is benefit to be had from these skins.'He replied, 'Indeed, but I am only doing this out of anger for Allah's sake, because of the wrath He holds against what is inside them.'Umar said, 'I will do it for you, Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'He said, 'No.'"Some narrators add details to the account beyond others.
Hakam narrated it (4/144–145) from Abu Abbas Muhammad bin Yaqub, who said, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Hakam informed us, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Shurayh Khawlani told me, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Hakam said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."There is also a report on this subject from Ibn Masud, which Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned in al-Ilal (2/27), and there are other hadiths with similar meaning. See the book on drinks.
