Malik related it in "Drinks" (12) from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ibn Waala Misri, that he asked Abdullah bin Ibn Abbas about what is pressed from grapes, and Ibn Abbas mentioned it. Muslim related it in "Sharecropping" (1579) through Malik and others, from Zayd bin Aslam, with the same wording. Ibn Waala's name is Abdul-Rahman bin Waala Sabai, originally from Egypt, who later moved to Madinah and settled there.Ibn Hibban related it (4944) through another route, from Abu Khaythama, who said, Rubai bin Ibrahim, brother of Ismail bin Ulaya, narrated to us, saying, Abdul-Rahman bin Ishaq narrated to us, saying, Zayd bin Aslam narrated to us, from Ibn Waala, from Ibn Abbas, that a man set out at a time when wine was still lawful, and he presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a large skin of wine as a gift, bringing it on a camel, until he found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting. He said, "What is this you have with you?" The man said, "A skin of wine I am giving you as a gift." He said, "Did you know that Allah has forbidden it?" The man said, "No." He said, "Allah has indeed forbidden it." The man then turned to the one leading the camel and said something to him privately between the two of them. The man stood up, and the Prophet asked, "What did you say to him?" He said, "I ordered him to sell it." He said, "The One who forbade drinking it has also forbidden selling it." He said, so he ordered that the mouths of the waterskins be opened, and they were opened, and it poured out onto the ground, and I watched it in the open valley until nothing remained in them.Ahmad (2041), Abu Yaala (2468), and Darimi (2613) related it from the hadith of Ibn Ishaq, from Qaqa bin Hakeem, from Abdul-Rahman bin Waala. In this version, the one who gave the gift was a friend of the Prophet ﷺ from Thaqif or Daws, and this took place on the day of the Conquest. The hadith then continues as before. Muhammad bin Ishaq is acceptable as a corroborating source.His saying, "a skin of wine," means a waterskin filled with wine. His saying, "so he spoke to him secretly," means he told him something privately. And the Prophet's ﷺ words, "What did you order him?" mean, what did you instruct him to do. The Prophet did not reprimand him, because he did not yet know that wine had been forbidden.His saying ﷺ, "The One who forbade drinking it has also forbidden selling it," means that Allah forbade drinking it, and He, exalted is He, also forbade selling it. This shows that whatever the Prophet ﷺ forbade is exactly what Allah forbade, for indeed "He does not speak out of desire. It is nothing but a revelation revealed" [Najm 53:3–4].
