Abu Dawud (3400), Ibn Majah (2267), and Nasai (3890) all narrated it from the hadith of Abu Ahwas, from Tariq bin Abdul-Rahman, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Rafi bin Khadij, who related it. Its chain is hasan on account of Tariq bin Abdul-Rahman, who is the Bajali Ahmasi Kufi, about whom there is disagreement, though he is hasan al-hadith, and he is among the men of the Sahih. They added after his statement, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade muhaqalah and muzabanah," and he said, "Only three may cultivate, a man who has land and cultivates it himself, a man who has been granted land and cultivates what he was granted, and a man who has leased land in exchange for gold or silver."Some scholars thought this addition was also a raised statement of the Prophet, but the correct view is that it is a statement of Saeed bin Musayab himself, as Nasai clarified in al-Mujtaba (3890, 3891), where he said, "Israil distinguished it from Tariq's report, so he related the first statement as a connected report and made the last part the statement of Saeed."Then he narrated it by way of Israil bin Yunus, from Tariq bin Abdul-Rahman, from Saeed, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade muhaqalah." Saeed said, then he related something similar to it.Then he also narrated it by way of Sufyan Thawri, from Tariq (corroborating Israil), who said, "I heard Saeed bin Musayab say, cultivation is only proper in three cases, land whose ownership one holds, a grant, or bare land which one rents out for gold or silver. And Zuhri narrated the first statement from Saeed as a connected report." End of quote.
