The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Merchants are wrongdoers."Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, has Allah not made trade lawful?"He replied, "Indeed He has, but they speak and lie, and they swear oaths and sin."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إن التجار هم الفجار. قيل: يا رسول الله، أو ليس قد أحل الله البيع؟ قال: بلى، ولكنهم يحدثون فيكذبون، ويحلفون فيأثمون.
Ahmad (15530), Hakim (6/2-7), and from him Bayhaqi in Kitab al-Adab (1100) and Shuab al-Iman (4/218) narrated it, via the route of Hisham Dastawai, who said, Yahya bin Abu Kathir related to me, from Abu Rashid Hubrani, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Shibl said, and he mentioned it. Yahya bin Abu Kathir explicitly stated that he heard it directly from Abu Rashid Hubrani, as found in Hakim's version. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith." And it is as he said.However, Aban (that is, Ibn Yazid Attar) narrated it from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Zayd, from Abu Salam, from Abu Rashid Hubrani, with his chain. Ahmad (15669) and Bayhaqi in Shuab al-Iman narrated it by this route. Likewise, Ali bin Mubarak narrated it from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Zayd bin Salam, from Abu Salam, from Abu Rashid, and he mentioned it. Bayhaqi narrated it by his route in Shuab al-Iman, and mentioned it in Kitab al-Adab.In Shuab al-Iman he said, Hisham Dastawai differed from both of them, narrating it from Yahya, from Abu Rashid, and mentioning that he heard it from Abu Rashid. End of quote. And in Kitab al-Adab he said, "Hisham has the stronger memory."I say, there is disagreement over whether Yahya bin Abu Kathir heard directly from Abu Rashid. Abu Hatim confirmed it, and graded this chain sahih in Kitab al-Ilal (2/63), within the text of another hadith. This is the hadith that Wahib narrated, from Ayub, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Rashid, from Abdul-Rahman bin Shibl, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Recite the Quran." Abu Hatim said, "Some of them narrated it saying, from Yahya, from Zayd bin Salam, from Abu Salam, from Abu Rashid Hubrani, from Abdul-Rahman bin Shibl, from the Prophet ﷺ. Both are sahih, except that Ayub omitted two men from the chain." End of quote.I say, Yahya bin Abu Kathir Yamami is one of the great scholars, and he narrated from a number of the companions, among them Jabir, Anas, and Abu Umama, and his narrations from them appear in Sahih Muslim. See Jami Tahsil (880). However, he engaged frequently in tadlis, but he explicitly stated that he heard directly from Abu Rashid in Hakim's Mustadrak, as mentioned above. There is no disagreement over his having heard directly from Zayd bin Salam. So if there is a break in the first chain, it has been established through the second chain. Praise be to Allah.
