Zubayr had a dispute with a man from the Ansar who had fought at Badr. They brought their case before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning irrigation streams in the lava field from which they both used to water their land.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zubayr, "Water your land, Zubayr, then let the water flow to your neighbor."The Ansari became angry and said, "Messenger of Allah, is it because he is the son of your aunt?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed color, then he said, "Water your land, Zubayr, then hold back the water until it reaches the walls."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then secured for Zubayr his full right. Before this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had suggested to Zubayr a course that allowed leeway for him and for the Ansari, but when the Ansari provoked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he secured for Zubayr his full right by the explicit ruling.Urwa said, Zubayr said, "By Allah, I do not think this verse was revealed except concerning that incident, 'But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge concerning that over which they dispute'" [Nisa 4:65].
أنه خاصم رجلا من الأنصار قد شهد بدرا إلى رسول الله ﷺ في شراج من الحرة، كانا يسقيان به كلاهما، فقال رسول الله ﷺ للزبير: اسق يا زبير، ثم أرسل إلى جارك. فغضب الأنصاري، فقال: يا رسول الله، آن كان ابن عمتك. فتلون وجه رسول الله ﷺ، ثم قال: اسق، ثم احبس حتى يبلغ الجدر. فاستوعى رسول الله ﷺ حينئذ حقه للزبير، وكان رسول الله ﷺ قبل ذلك أشار على الزبير برأي سعة له وللأنصاري، فلما أحفظ الأنصاري رسول الله ﷺ استوعى للزبير حقه في صريح الحكم. قال عروة: قال الزبير: والله ما أحسب هذه الآية نزلت إلا في ذلك: {فلا وربك لا يؤمنون حتى يحكموك فيما شجر بينهم}
Bukhari in Sulh (2708) narrated from Abu Yaman, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, Urwa bin Zubayr informed me from Zubayr, and he related it.His saying, "when he became angered" means he became angry.
