His father reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him a piece of land. He said, "The Prophet sent Muawiya along with me to hand it over to me," or he said, "to mark it out for me."He continued, Muawiya said to me, "Let me ride behind you."I said, "You are not among those who ride behind kings."Then he said, "Give me your sandal."I said, "Walk in the shade of the camel."When Muawiya became caliph, I came to him, and he seated me beside him on the throne and reminded me of that incident.Simak said, He then remarked, "I wish I had carried him in front of me."
عن أبيه أن رسول الله ﷺ أقطعه أرضا قال: فأرسل معي معاوية أن أعطها إياه- أو قال أعلمها إياه- قال: فقال لي معاوية: أردفني خلفك. فقلت: لا تكون من أرداف الملوك. قال: فقال: أعطني نعلك. فقلت: انتعل ظل الناقة. قال: فلما استخلف معاوية أتيته، فأقعدني معه على السرير، فذكرني الحديث، فقال سماك: فقال: وددت أني كنت حملته بين يدي.
Abu Dawud (3058), Tirmidhi (1381), and Darimi (2651) all narrated it from the hadith of Shuba, from Simak, from Alqama bin Waail, from his father, mentioning it in abridged form as, "The Prophet ﷺ granted him a piece of land in Hadramawt." Imam Ahmad (27239) also narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7205) graded it sahih, both of them narrating it from this same route, and the wording given here is theirs.Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of the discussion regarding Simak bin Harb and Alqama bin Waail, since these two narrators make the hadith hasan. It has been said that there is a break in the chain, since Alqama did not hear directly from his father, as Ibn Madini stated. Alai mentioned this in Jami Tahsil (p. 240), and likewise Abu Zura Iraqi mentioned it in Tuhfat Tahsil (p. 233). Bukhari said the same as well, though Tirmidhi disputed it. In Sahih Muslim (1680) there is an explicit statement that he did hear it from his father.
