The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to grant a portion of land in Bahrain to the Ansar. They said, "Not until you grant our brothers among the Muhajirun the like of what you grant us."He replied, "After me you will see others preferred over you, so be patient until you meet me."
أراد رسول الله ﷺ أن يقطع من البحرين، فقالت الأنصار: حتى تقطع لإخواننا من المهاجرين مثل الذي تقطع لنا. قال: سترون بعدي أثرة فاصبروا حتى تلقوني.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Musaqat (2376) from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad narrated to us, from Yahya bin Saeed, who said, I heard Anas say, and then he mentioned it. He also narrated it (3794) through another route from Abdullah bin Muhammad, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Yahya bin Saeed, who heard Anas bin Malik, when he went out with him to Walid, say, "The Prophet ﷺ invited the Ansar to have Bahrain apportioned to them, but they said, 'No, not unless the like of it is apportioned to our brothers among the Muhajirin.' He said, 'Well then, be patient until you meet me, for after me you will encounter favoritism shown to others.'"This contains proof that it is permissible for the ruler to grant land to some of the subjects and not others, according to the public interest, which may not be apparent to people in general. As for Khattabi, he said, "It seems that his granting of land from Bahrain was on one of two grounds, either it was uncultivated land that no one owned, which could be acquired through cultivation, or it was developed land of which a fifth belonged to him by right, for it has been reported that he conquered Bahrain and left its land without dividing it, unlike how he divided Khaybar." Alam Hadith (2/1188-1189).If that were the case, then granting it to the Ansar would carry no special distinction, nor would there be any grounds for their objection, nor for their request on behalf of the Muhajirin as well.Bahrain is not the well-known country of today, but rather the term used to apply to the coasts of Najd between Qatar and Kuwait, whose main town was Hajar, which is today Hofuf. This region was given the name Eastern Province, and most of what appears in the books of sira and sunnah under the name Bahrain refers to what lies in the east of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
