Usayd bin Zaheer reported,

Whenever one of us had no need for his land, he would lease it out for a third, a quarter, or a half of its produce, stipulating for himself the yield of three irrigation channels, what remained on the stalks after harvest, and what the spring rain watered. Life in those days was hard, and the owner would work the land with iron tools and whatever else Allah willed, gaining some benefit from it.Then Rafi bin Khadij came to us and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbids you from a practice that was once beneficial to you, but obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ is more beneficial for you. The Prophet ﷺ forbids you from sharecropping and says, 'Whoever has no need for his land, let him give it to his brother to farm, or let him leave it.' He also forbids you from muzabanah. Muzabanah is when a man has a large quantity of dates on his palm trees, and another man comes to him and says, 'I will take it for such-and-such number of wasqs of dried dates.'"
