Rafi said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a practice that had been beneficial for us."I said, "Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said is the truth."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and asked, 'What do you do with your farmlands?'I replied, 'We rent them out in exchange for a share of what grows along the streams, and for set measures of dates and barley.'He said, 'Do not do that. Either cultivate them yourselves, or let others cultivate them, or hold on to them.'"Rafi said, "I replied, 'I hear and obey.'"
لقد نهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن أمر كان بنا رافقا. قلت: ما قال رسول الله ﷺ فهو حق. قال: دعاني رسول الله ﷺ قال: ما تصنعون بمحاقلكم؟ قلت: نؤاجرها على الربيع، وعلى الأوسق من التمر والشعير. قال: لا تفعلوا، ازرعوها، أو أزرعوها، أو أمسكوها. قال رافع: قلت: سمعا وطاعة.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of cultivation and sharecropping (2339), and Muslim in the book of transactions (1548:114), both of them through Uzai, from Abu Najashi, the freedman of Rafi bin Khadij, who said, "I heard Rafi bin Khadij bin Rafi," from his uncle Zuhayr bin Rafi, and Zuhayr mentioned it. The wording is Bukhari's, and Muslim did not mention, "Rafi said, 'We hear and obey.'" Abu Najashi is Ataa bin Suhayb Ansari. This prohibition was at the beginning of the matter.
