The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: أعط الأجير أجره قبل أن يجف عرقه.
Tahawi narrated it in his Mushkil (4/142), Ibn Adi in Kamil (6/2235), and Bayhaqi in his Kubra (6/121) and Sughra (2133) in my edition, all of them through the route of Muhammad bin Ammar the muezzin, from Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. Its chain is hasan due to some minor comments about Muhammad bin Ammar, though Ibn Madini deemed him reliable. Ibn Main said, "There was nothing wrong with him." Ibn Hibban and Ibn Shahin also deemed him reliable. The hadith has other routes as well, all of them daif, found in Abu Yaala (6682) and Abu Naeem in his Hilyah (7/142), but the one I have mentioned is the soundest of them.On this subject there is also a report from Ibn Umar, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give the hired worker his wage before his sweat dries." Ibn Majah narrated it (2443), and Quda'i in Musnad Shihab (744), both of them from the hadith of Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, from Abdullah bin Umar, who mentioned it. Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam is daif. Moreover, he was contradicted, for Humayd bin Zanjawayh narrated it in Amwal through the route of Uthman bin Uthman Ghatafani, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, as a mursal report. This is closer to being correct, since Uthman bin Uthman Ghatafani is in a better position than Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd, for Ibn Main and others deemed him reliable. Ibn Adi said, "I have not seen him narrate any objectionable hadith."On this subject there is also what has been reported from Jabir, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give the hired worker his wage before his sweat dries." Tabarani narrated it in Saghir (1/20–21), and from him Khatib in his Tarikh (5/33), from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Salt Baghdadi in Egypt, who said, Muhammad bin Ziyad bin Zabbar Kalbi told us, Sharqi bin Qatami told us, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, who mentioned it. Tabarani said, "No one narrated it from Abu Zubayr except Sharqi, and Muhammad bin Ziyad narrated it alone." Khatib said, "No one narrated from Muhammad bin Ziyad except Ibn Salt." In it is Muhammad bin Ziyad bin Zabbar Kalbi, who is daif. Khatib quoted in his Tarikh (5/282) from Yahya bin Main, "Nothing." Abu Ali said, "He used to narrate poetry and the accounts of people's affairs in Baghdad, and he is not much." Haythami mentioned it in Majma (4/98) and identified its defect as Sharqi bin Qatami, who is daif.On this subject there is also what has been reported from Anas bin Malik, narrated by Hakeem Tirmidhi in Nawadir Usul, as Zaylai stated in Nasb Raya (4/130), and in it is Bishr bin Husayn, of whom Bukhari said, "There is something questionable about him." Daraqutni said, "He is discarded." See Lisan (2/21).In sum, nothing has been established on this subject except the hadith of Abu Hurairah, and it is hasan, as noted before, and these supporting reports strengthen it. This shows that the hadith, "Give the hired worker his wage before his sweat dries," has a firm basis.
