Abdullah bin Umar reported,

Ayesha was negotiating to buy Barirah when the Prophet ﷺ went out to pray. When he returned, she said, "They refuse to sell her unless they stipulate that the right of guardianship remains with them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "The right of guardianship belongs only to the one who frees the slave."I asked Nafi, "Was her husband free or a slave?"He replied, "How would I know?"

عن ابن عمر

أن عائشة -رضي الله عنها- ساومت بريرة، فخرج النبي ﷺ إلى الصلاة، فلما جاء قالت: إنهم أبوا أن يبيعوها إلا أن يشترطوا الولاء. فقال النبي ﷺ: إنما الولاء لمن أعتق. قلت لنافع: حرا كان زوجها أو عبدا؟ فقال: ما يدريني.
