I and Mukhrafa al-Abdi brought some cloth from Hajar, and the Prophet ﷺ came to us and bargained with us over a pair of trousers. I had with me a weigher who weighed for a fee, and the Prophet ﷺ said to the weigher, "Weigh, and tip the scale in his favor."
جلبت أنا ومخرفة العبدي بزا من هجر، فجاءنا النبي ﷺ، فساومنا بسراويل، وعندي وزان، يزن بالأجر، فقال النبي ﷺ للوزان: زن، وأرجح.
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (3336), Tirmidhi (1305), Nasai (4592), Ibn Majah (1220), and Ahmad (19098), all of them through Sufyan Thawri, from Simak, from Suwayd bin Qays, and he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban (5147) and Hakim (30/2-31) graded it sahih.I say, its chain is hasan because of the discussion surrounding Simak, except that his hadith is hasan when it is not from Ikrima. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih. However, there is disagreement regarding Simak bin Harb. Sufyan Thawri narrated it this way, and Qays bin Rabi followed him, as recorded by Abu Dawud Tayalisi (1288), and from him Bayhaqi (33/6-34), as did Ayub bin Jabir with Bukhari in Tarikh al-Kabir (4/192). Among those who also followed him was Sharik, as Daraqutni stated in his Ilal (25/14), where he said, what is preserved is that Qays bin Rabi, Sharik, and Thawri narrated from Simak, from Suwayd bin Qays, who said, "I brought goods, and Makhrama Abdi."Shuba differed with them, narrating it from Simak, from Abu Safwan bin Umayra, who said, "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Makkah before he emigrated," with this hadith, but he did not mention "he weighed with an extra amount." This was narrated by Abu Dawud (3337), Ibn Majah (2221), Ahmad (19099), Hakim (2/31-30), and Bayhaqi, all of them through routes from Shuba, with this wording. The wording is Abu Dawud's, and some of them add to others.Abu Dawud said, "Qays narrated it as Sufyan said, and the correct view is Sufyan's view." He also said, "Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated to us, Waki narrated to us, from Shuba, who said, 'Sufyan had a better memory than me.'" This was likewise transmitted from Yahya bin Main, who said, "Whoever differs from Sufyan, the correct view is Sufyan's view." This is the end of Abu Dawud's statement.Likewise, Daraqutni said in the Ilal (26/14) that Shuba erred, saying, "from Simak, I heard Abu Safwan Malik bin Umayra," while the correct name is Suwayd bin Qays. However, Hakim said, "Abu Safwan is the kunya of Suwayd bin Qays, they are one and the same, a companion from the Ansar, and the hadith is sahih according to the criterion of Muslim."Likewise, Mizzi said in his Tahdhib, "Suwayd bin Qays, Abu Safwan, and it is also said Abu Wahb, had companionship with the Prophet."Ibn Hajar said in the Tahdhib, "The assertion that his kunya is Abu Safwan requires examination, for the one whose kunya is Abu Safwan is named Malik." And Allah knows best.Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Suwayd is hasan sahih. Scholars recommend giving generously in weighing. Shuba narrated this hadith from Simak, saying, 'from Abu Safwan,' and he mentioned the hadith."As for his statement "Makhrafa" with a fa, it is also said "Makhrama" with a mim, this is how Ibn Qani mentioned it in Mujam al-Sahaba (3/125-126).Daraqutni said in the Ilal, "Ayub bin Jabir narrated it, from Simak, from Makhrafa Abdi, or Makhrama, Muhammad bin Bakkar bin Rayyan was uncertain about this from Ayub bin Jabir. Likewise, Yahya bin Yaala Aslami said, from Thawri, from Simak, from Makhrafa Abdi."
