Aisha asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Has any day been harder on you than the day of Uhud?"He ﷺ replied, "I endured from your people what I endured, and the worst I suffered from them was on the day of Aqabah. I presented myself to Ibn Abd Yalil bin Abd Kulal, but he did not respond to me as I had hoped. So I set off, distressed and disheartened, and I did not come to myself until I reached Qarn al-Thaalib. I raised my head and saw a cloud shading me. I looked, and there was Jibreel . He called out to me and said, 'Muhammad, Allah
has heard what your people said to you and how they rejected you. He has sent the angel of the mountains to you, so that you may command him to do whatever you wish with them.'The angel of the mountains then called out to me, greeted me, and said, 'Muhammad, Allah
has heard what your people said to you. I am the angel of the mountains, and your Lord has sent me to you so that you may give me your command. Whatever you wish, if you want, I will crush them between the two mountains of Mecca.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their loins those who will worship Allah alone and associate nothing with Him."
Bukhari narrated it in the Beginning of Creation (3231), and Muslim narrated it in Jihad and Expeditions (1795), both from the hadith of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Urwa bin Zubayr narrated to me, and he related the hadith. The wording given here is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is similar. His statement, "at Qarn Thaalib," refers to the miqat of the people of Najd, also called Qarn Manazil. His statement, "the two Akhshabayn," refers to the two mountains of Makkah, Abu Qubays and the one facing it. This incident took place after the Prophet ﷺ returned from Taif.
