We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a state of ihram for Hajj, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to share in the camels and cattle, every seven of us joining together in one animal.
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ مهلين بالحج، فأمرنا رسول الله ﷺ أن نشترك في الإبل والبقر كل سبعة منا في بدنة.
Muslim narrated it in the Hajj chapter (1318: 351) through several routes from Zuhayr bin Khaythama, who said, Abu Zubayr told us, from Jabir, and he mentioned it. In another version, "We shared with the Prophet ﷺ in Hajj and Umrah, seven of us to a camel." A man said to Jabir, "Can people share in a camel the way they share in a slaughter animal?" He said, "It is nothing but one of the badanah animals." In another version, "We used to perform Umrah as tamattu with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we would slaughter a cow on behalf of seven of us sharing in it."Tirmidhi (904), after narrating this hadith, said, "The practice among the people of knowledge from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others is that they hold that a camel may be shared by seven, and a cow by seven. This is the view of Sufyan Thawri, Shafii, and Ahmad. It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, that a cow is for seven and a camel is for ten. This is the view of Ishaq, who cited this hadith as evidence. As for the hadith of Ibn Abbas, we know it only through a single route."I say, the hadith of Ibn Abbas is the one that follows after this hadith.
