We set out with the Prophet, intending nothing but the Hajj. When we reached Sarif, or somewhere near it, I began menstruating. The Prophet ﷺ came in to see me while I was weeping.He asked, "Have you started your period?"I said, "Yes."He said, "This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. So perform all the rites the pilgrim performs, except that you must not circumambulate the House until you have bathed."She said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives.
خرجنا مع النبي، ولا نرى إلا الحج حتى إذا كنا بسرف أو قريبا منها، حضت. فدخل علي النبي ﷺ وأنا أبكي. فقال: أنفست؟ يعني الحيضة قالت: قلت: نعم. قال: إن هذا شيء كتبه الله على بنات آدم، فاقضي ما يقضي الحاج، غير أن لا تطوفي بالبيت حتى تغتسلي. قالت: وضحى رسول الله ﷺ عن نسائه بالبقر.
Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on Menstruation (294), and Muslim in the Chapter on Hajj (1211:119), both through Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, "I heard Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim say, 'I heard Qasim say, "I heard Ayesha say"'" (and he mentioned it). Muslim also narrated it (120) through Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Salama Majishun, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Ayesha, with a longer wording. In it, "When the Day of Sacrifice came, I became pure, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me and I performed the tawaf. She said, then we were brought beef. I said, 'What is this?' They said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cattle on behalf of his wives...'" the hadith continues.
