The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not turn your houses into graves, and do not make my grave a place of festival. Send blessings upon me, for your blessings reach me wherever you may be."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا تجعلوا بيوتكم قبورا، ولا تجعلوا قبري عيدا، وصلوا علي فإن صلاتكم تبلغني حيث كنتم.
Abu Dawud (2042) narrated it from Ahmad bin Salih, who said, I read to Abdullah bin Nafi, Ibn Abu Dhib told me, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Its chain is hasan due to the discussion surrounding Abdullah bin Nafi, the goldsmith, the client of the Makhzum, for when he narrated from memory he would make mistakes, but when he narrated from a book he would get it right, and here he narrated from a book. Imam Ahmad (8804) narrated it through his route as well.As for his saying, "a festival," it means, do not turn it into a gathering place like the festivals to which people intend to assemble for prayer, but rather his grave, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, should be visited as the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, used to visit it, in the manner that he approves of and loves, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him. This was stated by Ibn Qayyim in Tahzib Sunan (2/447).
