The Prophet ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and asked, "Do you know what day this is?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent so long that we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?"We said, "Yes, it is."He asked, "What month is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent so long that we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?"We said, "Yes, it is."He asked, "What land is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent so long that we thought he would give it a different name. Then he said, "Is it not the Sacred City?"We said, "Yes, it is."He said, "Indeed, your blood and your property are sacred to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. Have I conveyed the message?"They said, "Yes."He said, "O Allah, bear witness. Let those present convey this to those absent, for many a one to whom a message is conveyed grasps it better than the one who first heard it. Do not return to disbelief after me, striking one another's necks."
Bukhari related it in Hajj (1741), and Muslim in Qasama (1679:31), both through the route of Abu Amir Abdul-Malik bin Amr, who said, Qurra bin Khalid told us, Muhammad bin Sirin told us, Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakra informed me, from Abu Bakra, and he narrated it. The wording given is Bukhari's.Bukhari also related it in Maghazi (4406), and Muslim in Qasama (1679:29), both through the route of Abdul-Wahhab Thaqafi, who said, Ayub told us, from Muhammad bin Sirin, with the same chain, that he said, "Time has come full circle, taking the same form it had on the day Allah created the heavens and earth. The year has twelve months, four of which are sacred, three of them consecutive, Dhul-Qaidah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar, which falls between Jumada and Shaban." Then he said, "Which month is this?" Then he narrated the rest similarly, and added after his saying "Your blood and your wealth" - Muhammad, meaning Ibn Sirin, said, "And I think he also said, 'and your honor.'"Bukhari also related it in Ilm (67), and Muslim in Qasama (1679:30), both through the route of Abdullah bin Awn, from Muhammad bin Sirin, with the same chain, who said, "When that day came, he sat upon his camel, and a man took hold of its halter, and he said, 'Do you know what day this is?'" Then he narrated the rest similarly, and in it his saying "and your honor" is stated with certainty.Muslim added at the end, he said, "Then he turned to two black-and-white spotted rams and slaughtered them, and to a small flock of sheep and distributed it among us." This is an inserted addition that does not belong to the hadith of Abu Bakra, but rather comes from the narration of Muhammad bin Sirin, from Anas bin Malik, concerning the Eid al-Adha sermon, as found in the Sahihayn and elsewhere.Qadi Iyad said, "The more likely explanation is that this addition actually belongs to another hadith about the Eid al-Adha sermon, and the narrator became confused, mentioning it as joined to the Hajj sermon. Or they are two separate hadiths that were combined into one. Muslim mentioned this again later, in the Book of Sacrifices, from the hadith of Ayub and Hisham, from Ibn Sirin, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ prayed, then delivered a sermon, and ordered whoever had slaughtered before the prayer to repeat it. Then at the end of the hadith he said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to two black-and-white spotted rams and slaughtered them, and the people came forward to a small flock and distributed it among themselves.' This is the sahih version, and it resolves the difficulty." End of quote, taken from Nawawi's Sharh Sahih Muslim (11/170-171).See also Daraqutni's Ilal, questions (1265) and (1268), where he criticized this narration in a similar manner, attributing the error to its narrator Abdullah bin Awn.I say, the hadith of Anas referred to will have its sourcing discussed later in the Book of Sacrifices.
