I was sitting with Ibn Abbas near the Kaabah when an Arabi came up to him and said, "Why is it that I see your cousins serving honey and milk to drink, while you serve nabidh? Is it out of need or stinginess?"Ibn Abbas replied, "Praise be to Allah, it is neither need nor stinginess. The Prophet ﷺ arrived on his mount with Usama riding behind him, and he asked for something to drink. We brought him a vessel of nabidh, and he drank from it and gave the rest to Usama to drink. He said, 'You have done well and acted nobly. Continue to do just as you have done.' So we have no wish to change what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded."
كنت جالسا مع ابن عباس عند الكعبة، فأتاه أعرابي، فقال: ما لي أرى بني عمكم يسقون العسل واللبن، وأنتم تسقون النبيذ؟ أمن حاجة بكم أم من بخل؟ فقال ابن عباس: الحمد لله ما بنا من حاجة ولا بخل، قدم النبي ﷺ على راحلته وخلفه أسامة فاستسقى، فأتيناه بإناء من نبيذ، فشرب وسقى فضله أسامة، وقال: أحسنتم وأجملتم، كذا فاصنعوا. فلا نريد تغيير ما أمر به رسول الله ﷺ.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on Hajj (1316) from Muhammad bin Minhal Dareer, who said, Yazid bin Zuray narrated to us, who said, Humayd Tawil narrated to us, from Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani, and he related it.Imam Ahmad also narrated it (3528) through another route, from Hammad, from Humayd, and in it, "What is the matter with the family of Muawiya, that they are given water and honey to drink, while the family of so-and-so are given milk?"
