We were with Jabir bin Abdullah, talking together, when the time for the afternoon prayer arrived. He stood and led us in prayer wearing a single garment which he had wrapped around himself, with his cloak set aside. Then water from Zamzam was brought to him, and he drank from it.The people asked, "What is this?"He replied, "This is Zamzam water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about it, 'The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk.'"He continued, "Then the Prophet ﷺ, while he was in Madinah before the conquest of Makkah, sent word to Suhayl bin Amr, 'Send us a gift of Zamzam water, and do not fail to do so.' So he sent him two large waterskins."

Bayhaqi narrated it (5/202) through two routes from Abu Muhammad Ahmad bin Ishaq bin Shayban Baghdadi in Herat, who said, Muaz bin Najda informed us, who said, Khallad bin Yahya narrated to us, who said, Ibrahim bin Tahman narrated to us, who said, Abu Zubayr narrated to us and said (and he related it).Its chain of transmission is hasan, for Muaz bin Najda, who is Harawi, and his teacher Khallad bin Yahya make the hadith hasan, and the rest of the men above them are trustworthy, and there is no need to consider those who came after them, because the hadith had already become well known before their time. Munziri had already graded it hasan, as mentioned previously.Bayhaqi also narrated it (5/202) through another route from Hushaym, from Abdullah bin Muammal Makhzumi, from Ibn Muhaysin, from Ataa, from Ibn Abbas, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Suhayl bin Amr for a gift of Zamzam water." He said, "This has been narrated from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas." In this chain is Hushaym, who is Ibn Bashir Wasiti, a trustworthy and reliable narrator, except that he used to omit links in his chains and conceal defects in transmission. Abdullah bin Muammal has already been discussed, but there is no harm in relying on him for corroborating reports and supporting witnesses, as is the case here.It is narrated from Ayesha, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that she used to carry Zamzam water and would say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to carry it. Tirmidhi narrated it (963) from Abu Kurayb, who said, Khallad bin Yazid Jufi narrated to us, who said, Zuhayr bin Muawiya narrated to us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it. Hakim narrated it (1/485), and from him Bayhaqi (5/202), through the route of Ibn Khuzayma, from Muhammad bin Ala bin Kurayb, with the same chain, similarly.Bayhaqi said, "Others narrated it from Abu Kurayb and added to it, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried it in small water vessels and waterskins, and he would pour it on the sick and give them to drink.'"I say, Bukhari narrated it in this manner in Tarikh al-Kabir (3/189), in the biographical entry on Khallad, saying, Ahmad said, Abu Kurayb narrated to us, with his chain, and he related it. He said, "Khallad has no corroborator for it."I say, Khallad bin Yazid Jufi was not deemed trustworthy by anyone except Ibn Hibban, who said, "He sometimes erred." This is one of his errors, for it has not been established in the sahih reports that the Prophet ﷺ used to carry Zamzam water. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib, we do not know it except through this route." Hakim graded it sahih, but Dhahabi criticized him for that, saying, "Khallad has no corroborator for it, as Bukhari said." Bayhaqi said in Shuab al-Iman (3/482), "This was narrated solely by this Khallad bin Yazid Jufi, with no corroborator."Al-Hafiz graded it daif in Talkhis (2/287), because of this solitary narration, but otherwise he is not daif at all, for had he been corroborated, his corroboration would have been accepted. Ibn Hajar did well in Taqrib when he said, "Truthful, though he sometimes made mistakes." Rather, what has come down in the reports is that he ﷺ was given Zamzam water as a gift, and the earlier generations used to carry it with them.
