The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had an appointment with Jibreel at a specific hour when he was to come to him. That hour arrived, but Jibreel did not come. The Prophet ﷺ had a staff in his hand, which he threw down, saying, "Allah does not break His promise, nor do His messengers."Then he turned and noticed a puppy under his bed. He asked, "Ayesha, when did this dog come in here?"She replied, "By Allah, I did not know."He gave orders for it to be removed, and it was taken out. Then Jibreel came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You made an appointment with me, and I sat waiting for you, but you did not come."Jibreel replied, "The dog that was in your house prevented me. We do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Clothing and Adornment (2104) from Suwayd bin Saeed, who said, Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim told us, from his father, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Ayesha, and he mentioned the hadith. Ibn Majah (3651) and Imam Ahmad (25100) also narrated it through another route, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Ayesha, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had arranged with Jibreel a time at which he would come to him, but he delayed in coming. So the Prophet ﷺ went out, and there was Jibreel standing at the door. The Prophet said, "What kept you from coming in?" He said, "There is a dog in the house, and we do not enter a house that has a dog or an image in it."Muhammad bin Amr is Ibn Alqama, who is truthful (saduq), and he has been corroborated in the first chain of transmission.
