I perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for his ihram when he entered into the state of consecration, and for his exiting from it after he had stoned Jamrat al-Aqaba, before he performed the tawaf.
طيبت رسول الله ﷺ لحرمه حين أحرم، ولحله بعدما رمى جمرة العقبة، قبل أن يطوف.
Nasai narrated it (2687) from Saeed bin Abdul-Rahman Abu Ubaydullah Makhzumi, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih.Imam Ahmad narrated it (26078) through another route from Ibn Jurayj, who said, Umar bin Abdullah bin Urwa told me, that he heard Urwa and Qasim both narrate from Ayesha, who said, "I perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my own hands with a fragrant powder for the Farewell Pilgrimage, for his ihram when he entered ihram, and for his exiting ihram when he threw the pebbles at Jamra Uqba on the Day of Sacrifice, before he performed tawaf around the House." Its isnad is sahih.Qasim's narration is found in the Sahihayn without mention of throwing the pebbles at Jamra Uqba.So Ayesha's statement, "after he threw the pebbles at Jamra Uqba, before he performed tawaf around the House," should be understood as after he threw the pebbles, sacrificed, and shaved his head, with only the tawaf excepted from this, because this is the order the Prophet ﷺ followed on the Day of Sacrifice. Her statement should likewise be understood, "for his exiting ihram before he performed tawaf," meaning after he threw the pebbles, sacrificed, and shaved his head, before the tawaf, as Ibn Umar made clear, and as Ibn Khuzayma explained, as will follow. As for what is narrated from Ayesha, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you throws the pebbles at Jamra Uqba, everything becomes permissible for him except women," this is daif, because what is sahih is that this was from his action, as mentioned before, not from his speech.Abu Dawud narrated it (1978) from Musaddad, who said, Abdul-Wahid bin Ziyad narrated to us, who said, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Zuhri, from Amra bint Abdul-Rahman, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.Abu Dawud said, "This hadith is daif. Hajjaj never saw Zuhri and never heard from him."I say, it is as he said, for Hajjaj bin Artah was a mudallis, and he was also described as making frequent errors. This is one of his errors, for others narrated it as an action of the Prophet ﷺ, not as his speech, and this is the well known and established version through multiple routes from Ayesha .Also among his errors is what Ibn Khuzayma (2937) and Bayhaqi (5/136) narrated through another route from Hajjaj bin Artah, from Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm, from Amra, from Ayesha, as a raised report, "When you throw the pebbles and shave your heads, everything becomes permissible for you, perfume and clothes, except women." He added to it, "and shave your heads."Bayhaqi said, "This is one of the confusions of Hajjaj bin Artah. The hadith is actually from Amra, from Ayesha, from the Prophet ﷺ, as narrated by everyone else, from Ayesha."He means by this what the rest of the narrators reported from the hadith of Ayesha, that she used to perfume the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for his ihram when he entered ihram, and for his exiting ihram before he performed tawaf around the House, as mentioned before in the hadith of Qasim bin Muhammad, and likewise Urwa narrated it in the Sahihayn, as did Salim bin Abdullah.Bayhaqi narrated it (5/135–136), and it contains Salim's statement, "the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah is more deserving of being followed."
