She heard the Prophet ﷺ say, when he departed from Arafat, "People, maintain calm and dignity, and pick up pebbles the size of those used in the flicking game."
أنها سمعت النبي ﷺ حيث أفاض قال: يا أيها الناس، عليكم بالسكينة والوقار، وعليكم بمثل حصى الخذف.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (23219) from Hushaym, [who said] Layth informed us, from Abdullah bin Shaddad, from Umm Jundab, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan. Hushaym is Ibn Bashir, and Layth is Ibn Saad, and Umm Jundab is the mother of Sulayman bin Amr bin Ahwas, as Tirmidhi confirmed when he said, "And on this topic there is a report from Sulayman bin Amr bin Ahwas," from his mother, who is Umm Jundab al-Azdiyyah, and that comes right after the hadith of Jabir (897).However, this isnad contains a break, for Layth bin Saad was born in the year 92 AH, after the death of Abdullah bin Shaddad in the year 81 AH. But this hadith was narrated through another route, as Tirmidhi said, which is by way of Sulayman bin Amr bin Ahwas, from his mother, who is Umm Jundab. It was narrated by Abu Dawud (1966, 1967, 1968), Ibn Majah (3028, 3031), Imam Ahmad (16087, 23218), and Bayhaqi (5/128), all of them through routes going back to Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Sulayman bin Amr bin Ahwas, from his mother, who said,"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ throwing the pebbles at the jamrah from the bottom of the valley, while mounted, saying 'Allahu akbar' with each pebble, and a man behind him was shielding him. I asked about the man, and they said, 'Fadl bin Abbas.' The people crowded together, so the Prophet ﷺ said, 'O people, do not kill one another. And when you throw the pebbles at the jamrah, throw pebbles the size of those used for flicking.'"This wording is Abu Dawud's, and the rest reported it in similar terms.Munziri said in Mukhtasar Abu Dawud, "Its isnad contains Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, and he is daif."I say, it is as he said. His teacher Sulayman bin Amr bin Ahwas was narrated from by no one except Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban. Therefore Hafiz said in Taqrib, "Acceptable," meaning if corroborated. And indeed he was corroborated, as in the first isnad, except that it mentioned the hadith in abridged form.Imam Ahmad also narrated it (27110) from Yazid bin Harun, from Hajjaj bin Artah, from Abu Yazid, the freed slave of Abdullah bin Harith, from Umm Jundab, with similar wording.Tirmidhi asked Bukhari about this hadith of Hajjaj, and he said, "I think that Hajjaj took it from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, and I believe it is the hadith of Sulayman bin Amr from his mother." Bayhaqi mentioned this (5/128).Hajjaj was known to obscure the true source in his transmissions, and this is an instance of that, for he turned "Yazid bin Abu Ziyad" into "Abu Yazid, the freed slave of Abdullah bin Harith," in order to hide his true status from people. So the hadith goes back to being the hadith of Yazid bin Abu Ziyad. With the combination of these routes, the hadith reaches the level of hasan.
