He set out alongside the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Arafah and heard behind him intense shouting, striking, and the noise of camels being driven. The Prophet ﷺ gestured toward the people with his whip and said, "People, maintain calm, for righteousness does not lie in haste."
أنه دفع مع النبي ﷺ يوم عرفة فسمع النبي ﷺ وراءه زجرا شديدا، وضربا وصوتا للإبل، فأشار بسوطه إليهم وقال: أيها الناس، عليكم بالسكينة، فإن البر ليس بالإيضاع.
Bukhari related it in the Hajj chapter (1671), from Saeed bin Abu Maryam, who said, Ibrahim bin Suwayd told us, Amr bin Abu Amr, the freed slave of Muttalib, told me, Saeed bin Jubayr, the freed slave of Walibah al-Kufi, told me, Ibn Abbas told me, and then he related it.His saying, "Righteousness does not lie in hurrying," means it does not lie in moving quickly. This makes clear ﷺ that forcing oneself to move quickly is not part of righteousness, that is, it is not among the things by which one draws near to Allah. See Fath al-Bari (3/522).
