I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the standing place, meaning at Jam. I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have come from the mountain of Tayy. I have exhausted my mount and worn myself out. By Allah, I did not leave a single hill without stopping at it. Is my Hajj valid?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Whoever catches this prayer with us and has come to Arafat before that, by night or by day, has completed his Hajj and fulfilled its rites."
Reported by Abu Dawud (1950), Tirmidhi (891), Nasai (3041), and Ibn Majah (3016), all through the route of Ismail bin Abu Khalid, who said, "Amir Shaybi narrated to us, from Urwa bin Mudarris," and then he related the hadith. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." This hadith was mentioned earlier in the chapter on the obligation of standing at Arafah.Imam Ahmad and others used the hadith of Urwa bin Mudarris as evidence that the time for standing begins from the rising of Fajr on the day of Arafah and extends until the rising of Fajr on the night of the sacrifice, treating the portions of the day and the portions of the night as equal.Sheikh Islam bin Taymiya reported that most of the Hanbalis, such as Abu Bakr, Ibn Abu Musa, Ibn Hamid, the Qadi, and his companions, said, "If someone stood at Arafah on the day of Arafah before noon and left before noon, he has done wrong, but his Hajj is complete, and he owes a sacrificial offering."As for Malik's view that whoever departs before sunset has no valid Hajj, Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Tamhid (21/10), "We do not know of any jurist among the scholars of the various regions who held Malik's view, for he himself stood after noon and after the prayer, nor have we transmitted this from any of the early generations. Rather, all the scholars said, whoever stands at Arafah after noon, or during the night of the sacrifice, has attained the Hajj. If he departs from Arafah before sunset, he owes a sacrificial offering according to them, but his Hajj is complete."
