I performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he prayed two rakahs. I performed Hajj with Abu Bakr and he prayed two rakahs, and with Umar and he prayed two rakahs, and with Uthman for six years of his caliphate, or eight years, and he prayed two rakahs. Then Uthman prayed four after that.
Tirmidhi (545) narrated it, and this is his wording, as did Abu Dawud (1229) in a shortened form, Imam Ahmad (19865), and Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba (2/450) in a longer account than this. All of them narrated it through Ali bin Judan, from Abu Nadra, that a young man asked Imran bin Husayn about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, and he said (and he related it). Imam Ahmad added, "Then after that Uthman prayed four."Ali bin Judan is Ali bin Zayd bin Abdullah bin Zuhayr bin Abdullah bin Judan Taymi Basri, who is daif, except that it has been related from Tirmidhi that he said, "He is truthful," and for that reason this hadith is graded hasan.I say, this is indeed the case with this hadith because of the existence of corroborating evidence that Uthman bin Affan did later pray in full at Mina.On this subject there is also what has been related from Abu Dharr, narrated by Qasim bin Awf Shaybani, from a man, who said, "We had brought something for Abu Dharr that we wanted to give him, so we came to Rabaza and asked about him but did not find him. We were told he had sought permission to go for Hajj and had been granted it. So we came to him at the town, which was Mina. While we were with him, it was said to him that Uthman had prayed four. This distressed Abu Dharr greatly and he spoke harshly, saying, 'I prayed with the Messenger of Allah and he prayed two, and I prayed with Abu Bakr and Umar.'" Then Abu Dharr stood and prayed four. He was asked, "You criticized the Commander of the Faithful for something, then you did it yourself!" He said, "Disagreement is worse. The Messenger of Allah addressed us and said, 'There will be a ruler after me, so do not humiliate him. Whoever seeks to humiliate him has cast off the bond of Islam from his neck, and no repentance will be accepted from him until he repairs the breach he caused, which he will not do. He will then return and be among those who honor him.'" And "The Messenger of Allah commanded us that we not be overcome by others in three things, that we command what is right, forbid what is wrong, and teach people the sunnahs."Imam Ahmad (21460) narrated it from Yazid and Muhammad bin Yazid, who said, Awwam narrated to us. Muhammad said, "from Qasim," while Yazid said in his account, "Qasim bin Awf Shaybani narrated to me," from a man, who said, and he related it. In it there is an unnamed man who is not known.
