Ibn Umar intended to perform the Hajj the year Hajjaj came against Ibn Zubayr. It was said to him, "The people are about to fight one another, and we fear they will prevent you from reaching the House."He replied, "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example" [Ahzab 33:21]. "I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you to witness that I have committed myself to performing Umra."Then he set out, and when he reached the open ground of Bayda, he said, "Hajj and Umra are but one matter. Bear witness," (Ibn Rumh said, "I call you to witness") "that I have now committed myself to perform Hajj along with my Umra."He had brought a sacrificial animal which he had purchased at Qudayd, then he proceeded chanting the talbiya for both together until he reached Makkah. He performed tawaf around the House and walked between Safa and Marwa, and he did nothing more. He did not slaughter, nor shave, nor shorten his hair, nor release himself from anything forbidden to him in ihram, until the day of sacrifice. Then he slaughtered and shaved, considering that his initial tawaf had fulfilled the tawaf of both Hajj and Umra.Ibn Umar said, "This is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did."
Bukhari related it in the Hajj chapter (1640), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1230:182), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, "Layth narrated to us, from Nafi," and so he related it.Ibn Umar's statement, "That is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted," is evidence that what Ibn Umar did is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ, namely that one performing a combined hajj and umrah (qarin) need only perform one sai.Ayub also related it from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, with this same account, but he did not mention the Prophet ﷺ except at the beginning of the hadith, when it was said to him, "They will prevent you from reaching the House." He said, "Then I will do just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did." He did not mention at the end of the hadith, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted," as Layth bin Saad mentioned it.This is how Muslim related it, through the route of Hammad and Ismail bin Ulaya, both from Ayub. Bukhari related it (1639) from the hadith of Ibn Ulaya, from Ayub, relating it in full. From this it becomes clear that Nafi sometimes stopped the report at Ibn Umar, and at other times attributed it to the Prophet. Among those who also attributed it to the Prophet, transmitting from Nafi, is Ubaydullah bin Umar, as will be seen in the following hadith.
