He was asked about tamattu in Hajj and replied, "The Muhajirun, the Ansar, and the wives of the Prophet ﷺ entered the state of ihram during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and we entered ihram along with them. When we arrived in Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Convert your ihram for Hajj into an Umra, except for those who have brought a sacrificial animal with them.' So we performed tawaf around the Kaaba and made the saee between Safa and Marwa, then we went to our wives and put on our regular clothes…" The hadith continues.
Bukhari mentioned it as a suspended chain in the chapter on Hajj (1572), from Abu Kamil Fudayl bin Husayn Basri, who said, Abu Mashar (that is, Yusuf bin Yazid Bara) narrated to us, Uthman bin Ghiyath narrated to us, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he related the hadith in full.Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (3/434), "Ismaili connected it with a full chain. He said, Qasim Mutarriz narrated to us, Ahmad bin Sinan narrated to us, Abu Kamil narrated to us, and he related it, but he said, 'Uthman bin Saad' instead of 'Uthman bin Ghiyath.' Both are from Basra, and each has narrations from Ikrima, but Uthman bin Ghiyath is trustworthy, while Uthman bin Saad is daif. Ismaili indicated that his teacher Qasim erred in saying 'Uthman bin Saad.' This is supported by the fact that Abu Masud Dimashqi mentioned in Atraf that he found it narrated by Muslim bin Hajjaj from Abu Kamil, just as Bukhari related it." End of quote.I say, Muslim's narration of it lies outside the Sahih, because this hadith is among Bukhari's unique narrations, as noted in Tuhfat Ashraf (5/150).
