Ibn Jurayj reported,

Ata reported, "When Ibn Hisham forbade women from performing tawaf together with men, I said to him, 'How can you forbid them when the wives of the Prophet ﷺ performed tawaf along with the men?'"I asked, "Was that after the verse of hijab was revealed, or before?"He replied, "By my life, I knew this practice to continue after the hijab."I asked, "How did they mix with the men?"He said, "They did not mix with them. Ayesha رضي الله عنها would perform tawaf at a distance from the men, not mingling with them. A woman once said to her, 'Come, Mother of the Believers, let us go and touch the Black Stone.'Ayesha replied, 'You go on without me,' and she refused. The women would go out at night in disguise and perform tawaf with the men, but when they wished to enter the Kabah they would stand back until they could enter while the men were sent out.Ubayd bin Umayr and I used to visit Ayesha while she was staying in the recess of Mount Thabir."I asked, "What was her screen like?"He said, "She was in a Turkish-style domed tent with a covering over it, and there was nothing between us and her except that. I saw her wearing a rose-colored shift."

Sahih
