I heard Ibn Abbas ﷺ say, "People, listen to what I tell you, and let me hear what you say, but do not go off and claim, 'Ibn Abbas said this, Ibn Abbas said that.' Whoever circumambulates the House must do so from beyond the Hijr. Do not call it al-Hatim, for in the days of Jahiliyyah a man would swear an oath there and cast down his whip, his sandal, or his bow."
سمعت ابن عباس ﷺ يقول: يا أيها الناس اسمعوا مني ما أقول لكم، وأسمعوني ما تقولون، ولا تذهبوا فتقولوا: قال ابن عباس، قال ابن عباس، من طاف بالبيت فليطف من وراء الحجر، ولا تقولوا: الحظيم، فإن الرجل في الجاهلية كان يحلف فيلقي سوطه أو نعله أو قوسه.
Bukhari reported it in the Merits of the Ansar (3848) from Abdullah bin Muhammad Jafi, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, Mutarrif informed us, I heard Abu Safar say, then he related it.His saying, "Let me hear what you are saying," means, repeat my words back to me so I can know that you have memorized and mastered them.His saying, "and do not call it Hatim," means that Ibn Abbas used to object to calling it Hatim, and he used to call it Hijr. The name Hatim is an old name, but its real reason is not known, and that is why Ibn Abbas used to object to this name.
