I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Is the Hijr part of the House?"He answered, "Yes."I asked, "Then why did they not include it within the House?"He replied, "Your people ran short of funds."I asked, "And why is its door raised so high?"He said, "Your people did that so they could admit whomever they wished and turn away whomever they wished. Were it not that your people are still close to the days of ignorance, and I fear their hearts would object, I would have considered including the Hijr within the House and bringing its door down to the ground."
سألت رسول الله ﷺ عن الجدر أمن البيت هو؟ قال: نعم. قلت: فلم لم يدخلوه في البيت؟ قال: إن قومك قصرت بهم النفقة. قلت: فما شأن بابه مرتفعا؟ قال: فعل ذلك قومك ليدخلوا من شاءوا ويمنعوا من شاءوا، ولولا أن قومك حديث عهدهم في الجاهلية؛ فأخاف أن تنكر قلوبهم لنظرت أن أدخل الجدر في البيت، وأن ألزق بابه بالأرض.
Bukhari narrated it in the Hajj chapter (1584), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1333:405), both from the hadith of Abu Ahwas, who said, we were told by Ashath bin Abu Shatha, from Aswad bin Yazid, from Ayesha, and he related it.The word "jidr" refers to the stone enclosure of the Kaaba. This is clarified by what Muslim narrated afterward through another route, from Shayban, from Ashath bin Abu Shatha, which includes, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the stone enclosure," and he related the hadith with the same meaning as the hadith of Abu Ahwas.
