Tirmidhi (858) and Imam Ahmad (3074) both narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq — it is also in his Musannaf (8944) — from Mamar and Thawri, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu Tufayl, who said, (then he related it). Its chain of transmission is sahih.The origin of this story is in Sahih Bukhari (1608), where he related it with a suspended chain, saying, "Muhammad bin Bakr said, Ibn Jurayj informed us, Amr bin Dinar informed me, from Abu Shatha, who said, 'Who would avoid touching part of the House? Muawiya used to touch the corners, and Ibn Abbas said to him, "These two corners of the House are not touched." So he said, "Nothing of the House is to be avoided." And Ibn Zubayr used to touch all of them.'"This is suspended, for Bukhari never met Muhammad bin Bakr, who was al-Bursani al-Basri, who died in 203 or 204 AH, and Bukhari's age at that time was ten years. This is one of the chains that has not reached us, and that is why Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, "I have not seen it through the route of Muhammad bin Bakr," meaning connected. Then he said in Taghliq Taliq (3/71), "Jawzaqi narrated it from the hadith of Uthman bin Haytham, from Ibn Jurayj, with the same wording."I say, the elevated portion of the hadith was also narrated by Muslim, as mentioned before, in abridged form without the story.Shuba narrated this hadith, and a reversal occurred in its text, and he himself acknowledged this, saying, "People disagree with him." This is what Ahmad (16858) narrated from Muhammad bin Jafar, [who said], Shuba and Hajjaj narrated to us. He said, Shuba narrated to me, saying, I heard Qatada narrating from Abu Tufayl. Hajjaj said in his narration, he said, I heard Abu Tufayl say, "Muawiya and Ibn Abbas arrived, and Ibn Abbas performed tawaf, touching all the corners. Muawiya said to him, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only touched the two Yemeni corners.' Ibn Abbas said, 'Nothing of its corners is to be avoided.'"Hajjaj said, Shuba said, "People differ regarding this hadith. They say, 'It was Muawiya who said, "Nothing of the House is to be avoided."' But Qatada memorized it this way."The apparent state of its chain is soundness, but the reversal occurred in the text, and the error is not from Shuba, rather the error is from Qatada, as is apparent from Shuba's statement. So attributing it to Shuba is a mistake, except that he used to narrate it this way, reversed.As for Muawiya's statement, "Nothing of the House is to be avoided," Shafii said, "No one has ever claimed that avoiding touching them was a shunning of the House of Allah, but he touched what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ touched, and refrained from what he refrained from."Bayhaqi, in Sunan al-Kubra (5/77).
