Umar bin Khattab reported,

He said to the Corner, "By Allah, I know well that you are only a stone, you bring neither harm nor benefit. Had I not seen the Prophet ﷺ kiss you, I would not kiss you." Then he kissed it.Then he said, "What have we to do with walking briskly? We only did it to show off our strength to the polytheists, and Allah has destroyed them."Then he said, "Yet it is something the Prophet ﷺ did, so we do not wish to abandon it."
