I was a Christian Arabi man, then I embraced Islam. I went to a man from my clan named Hudhaym bin Tarmala and said to him, "My good man, I am eager for jihad, but I have found that Hajj and Umrah are prescribed upon me. How can I combine them both?"He said, "Combine them and sacrifice whatever sacrificial animal is readily available."So I entered the state of ihram for both of them together. When I reached al-Udhayb, Salman bin Rabia and Zayd bin Sawhan met me while I was calling the talbiyah for both of them together. One of them said to the other, "This man is no more knowledgeable than his camel."It felt as though a mountain had been thrown upon me. I went to Umar bin Khattab and said to him, "Commander of the Believers, I was a Christian Arabi man, then I embraced Islam, and I am eager for jihad. I found that Hajj and Umrah are prescribed upon me, so I went to a man from my people, and he said to me, 'Combine them and sacrifice whatever sacrificial animal is readily available.' So I entered ihram for both of them together."Umar said to me, "You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ."
Abu Dawud (1799) reported it, and this is his wording, as did Nasai (2719) and Ibn Hibban (2970), all of them through chains going back to Abu Waail Shaqiq bin Salama, who said, Sabi bin Mabad said, and he mentioned the hadith.Imam Ahmad (83, 169, 227, 254, 256, 379) also reported it through this same route, and Ibn Khuzayma (3069) graded it sahih, as did Ibn Hibban (3910, 3911), and its chain of transmission is sahih.Shaqiq bin Salama said, Masruq and I would often go to Sabi bin Mabad and ask him about this hadith.Ibn Khuzayma said, "The fact that he did not object to him is clear evidence that combining Hajj and Umrah, in his view (meaning in the view of Umar bin Khattab), is permissible without driving a camel or a cow as a sacrifice from the miqat where one enters the state of ihram for Hajj and Umrah."He also said, This shows that a sacrificial animal which was purchased is permissible for one performing qiran, just as it is for one performing tamattu, contrary to what some scholars have said, namely that a person performing qiran must drive a camel or a cow with him from the place where he enters ihram.
