We entered the state of ihram with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for hajj alone.

Muslim narrated it in Hajj (1231) from Yahya bin Ayub and Abdullah bin Awn Hilali, who both said, "Abbad bin Abbad Muhallabi told us, Ubaydullah bin Umar told us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar," as above. The wording follows the version of Yahya bin Ayub.Muslim said, In the version of Ibn Awn, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered ihram for Hajj alone."On this subject there is also what was reported from Ibn Abbas, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ entered ihram for Hajj" (that is, alone), "and when he arrived he circled the House and went between Safa and Marwa" - Ibn Shawkar said, "and did not shorten his hair" - then the two narrations agree, "and he did not exit ihram because of the sacrificial animal, and he ordered whoever had not brought a sacrificial animal to circle the House, go between Safa and Marwa, shorten his hair, and then exit ihram."Ibn Mani added in his hadith, "or shave his head, then exit ihram."Abu Dawud narrated it (1792) from Hasan bin Shawkar and Ahmad bin Mani, who both said, "Hushaym told us, from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad" - meaning the same - "from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas," and he related it.Its chain is daif because of Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, who is Hashimi, their freedman, of Kufah, daif by the agreement of the scholars.Imam Ahmad also recorded it by this route (2152), and Munziri faulted it on this basis in his Mukhtasar, but the hadith is sahih from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ, as mentioned earlier, converted his Hajj into an Umrah. The two statements of Anas and Ayesha can be reconciled, as Khattabi said in Maalim Sunan. He said,"This may also admit of another explanation, namely that one of them heard him say, 'Here I am for Hajj,' and so reported that he performed it alone, while the phrase 'and Umrah' escaped his notice, so he reported only what he heard, and that was Ayesha. Another retained the addition and reported it, and that was Anas, when he said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Here I am for Hajj and Umrah."' Additions in reports are not to be rejected, just as they are not rejected in testimonies. Contradiction would only arise if the addition negated the statement of the other narrator, but if it confirms it and adds to it, there is no contradiction or conflict in it.It may also be that the narrator heard him say that by way of teaching someone else, saying to him, 'Here I am for Hajj and Umrah,' prompting him to say it.As for whoever reported that he performed Umrah followed by Hajj, exiting ihram in between, he has confirmed what Ayesha reported of his entering ihram for Hajj, and confirmed what Anas reported of Umrah and Hajj together, except that he added further clarification, distinguishing between the two acts by placing them at two separate times. This is what Hafsa reported. Abdullah bin Umar reported from her that she said,"O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with the people, that they have exited ihram while you have not exited ihram from your Umrah?" He said, "I have matted my hair and garlanded my sacrificial animal, so I will not exit ihram until I sacrifice it."This establishes that there was indeed an Umrah, except that he incorporated Hajj into it before completing any of the rites of Umrah, so he came under the ruling of one who combines Hajj and Umrah together. These reports, despite their apparent differences, contain no mutual contradiction or conflict, and reconciling them is possible, indeed easy to achieve and not impossible. Praise be to Allah.Another way to reconcile the statement of those who said he performed Hajj alone with the statement of those who said he entered ihram for Hajj and Umrah is that he did not enter ihram for Umrah independently, because he had brought a sacrificial animal, unlike one who had not brought a sacrificial animal and so performed Umrah independently first, then entered ihram for Hajj, thus combining Hajj and Umrah.Or it may be said that he ﷺ was initially performing Hajj alone, then became one who combined Hajj and Umrah together. And whoever said that he performed Umrah followed by Hajj with a release from ihram in between meant by it that he circled the House and went between Safa and Marwa as one performing Umrah does, except that he did not exit ihram, but rather remained in ihram until he sacrificed the animal. So the Prophet ﷺ resembled one who performs Umrah followed by Hajj in some respects, but not in every respect.
