Ibn Abbas used to instruct people to perform tamattu, while Ibn Zubayr used to forbid it. The narrator said, I mentioned this to Jabir bin Abdullah, who replied, "The hadith on this matter revolves around me. We performed tamattu with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then when Umar took office, he said, 'Allah used to permit for His Messenger whatever He wished in whatever manner He wished, and the Quran has now been revealed in its proper places, so complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah as He has commanded you, and put an end to these temporary marriages with women. No man will be brought to me who has married a woman for a fixed term without my stoning him to death.'"
كان ابن عباس يأمر بالمنعة، وكان ابن الزبير ينهى عنها. قال: فذكرت ذلك لجابر بن عبد الله، فقال: على يدي دار الحديث تمتعنا مع رسول الله ﷺ، فلما قام عمر قال: إن الله كان يحل لرسوله ما شاء بما شاء، وإن القرآن قد نزل منازله فاتموا الحج والعمرة لله كما أمركم الله وأبتوا نكاح هذه النساء فلن أوتى برجل نكح امرأة إلى أجل إلا رجمته بالحجارة.
Muslim narrated it in the Hajj (1217) via Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shuba narrated to us, I heard Qatada narrating from Abu Nadra (he is Munzir bin Malik bin Qita), with the same chain, and he related it.Muslim added, in a narration via Hammam, who said, Qatada narrated to us, with the same chain, from Umar, that he said, "Separate your Hajj from your Umrah, for that is more complete for your Hajj and more complete for your Umrah."Muslim also narrated it (1249) via Asim (he is Ahwal), from Abu Nadra, who said, "I was with Jabir bin Abdullah when someone came to him and said, 'Ibn Abbas and Ibn Zubayr have disagreed about the two temporary practices.' Jabir said, 'We did both of them with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then Umar forbade us from them, so we did not return to them.'"His saying, "the two temporary practices," means the temporary Hajj and temporary marriage.In a narration recorded by Imam Ahmad (369) via Hammam, who said, Qatada narrated to us with his chain, Jabir said, "We combined Umrah with Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and with Abu Bakr. Then when Umar bin Khattab took charge, he addressed the people and said, 'The Quran is the Quran, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is the Messenger, and there were two temporary practices in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one of them the temporary Hajj, and the other temporary marriage.'"It is also sahih from Uthman that he was asked about the temporary Hajj, and he said, "It was permitted for us, and it is not for you." Saeed bin Mansur narrated this in his Sunan.The prohibition has also been established from Muawiya, Ibn Zubayr, and others among the companions, regarding the temporary Hajj, along with their disapproval of it.Sheikh Islam bin Taymiya said, "It is known that combining Umrah with Hajj is not disliked by consensus, so their prohibition must be understood as directed at the muta of dissolution, while the permission for muta applies to that which is initiated from the outset, in order to reconcile their various statements."
