Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman reported,

He asked Urwa bin Zubayr, and Urwa said, "The Prophet ﷺ performed the pilgrimage, and Ayesha told me that the first thing he did when he arrived was to perform ablution, then circumambulate the House. After that there was no umrah.Then Abu Bakr performed the pilgrimage, and the first thing he did was circumambulate the House, and after that there was no umrah. Then Umar did the same. Then Uthman performed the pilgrimage, and I saw that the first thing he did was circumambulate the House, and after that there was no umrah. Then Muawiya and Abdullah bin Umar did likewise.Then I performed the pilgrimage with my father, Zubayr bin Awwam, and the first thing he did was circumambulate the House, and after that there was no umrah. Then I saw the Muhajirun and the Ansar do the same, with no umrah following. The last person I saw doing this was Ibn Umar, and he did not break the pilgrimage with an umrah.Ibn Umar is right here among them, yet they do not ask him, nor anyone of those who came before. They would not begin with anything once they set foot in Mecca except circumambulating the House, and then they would not exit the state of ihram. I saw my mother and my aunt when they would arrive begin with nothing before the House. They would circumambulate it and then not exit ihram.My mother told me that she, her sister, Zubayr, and so-and-so and so-and-so entered ihram for umrah, and once they touched the corner they exited ihram."

عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن نوفل القرشي

أنه سأل عروة بن الزبير، فقال: قد حج النبي ﷺ فأخبرتني عائشة رضي الله عنها أنه أول شيء بدأ به حين قدم أنه توضأ ثم طاف بالبيت، ثم لم تكن عمرة، ثم حج أبو بكر رضي الله عنه فكان أول شيء بدأ به الطواف بالبيت ثم لم تكن عمرة، ثم عمر رضي الله عنه مثل ذلك، ثم حج عثمان رضي الله عنه فرأيته أول شيء بدأ به الطواف بالبيت ثم لم تكن عمرة، ثم معاوية وعبد الله ابن عمر، ثم حججت مع أبي: الزبير بن العوام فكان أول شيء بدأ به الطواف بالبيت ثم لم تكن عمرة، ثم رأيت المهاجرين والأنصار يفعلون ذلك ثم لم تكن عمرة، ثم آخر من رأيت فعل ذلك ابن عمر ثم لم ينقضها عمرة، وهذا ابن عمر عندهم فلا يسألونه ولا أحد ممن مضى ما كانوا يبدؤون بشيء حتى يضعوا أقدامهم من الطواف بالبيت ثم لا يحلون، وقد رأيت أمي وخالتي حين تقدمان لا تبتدئان بشيء أول من البيت تطوفان به ثم إنهما لا تحلان، وقد أخبرتني أمي أنها أهلت هي وأختها والزبير وفلان وفلان بعمرة فلما مسحوا الركن حلوا.
