Ayesha reported,

We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speaking of nothing but the Hajj, until we reached Sarif, where I began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me while I was weeping. He asked, "What is making you cry?"I said, "By Allah, I wish I had not come out this year."He said, "What is the matter with you? Perhaps you are menstruating?"I said, "Yes."He said, "This is something Allah has decreed upon the daughters of Adam. Do what the pilgrim does, except do not circle the House until you become pure."She said, When we arrived in Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Make it an Umra." So the people came out of the state of ihram, except those who had brought sacrificial animals with them.

Sahih
